Running: Tell Me Your Politik

My focus this AM was on pace rather than distance. Politik from Coldplay (surprisingly) became my power song. I replayed it three times because I was able to keep pace perfectly with the kick drum. So well, in fact, that at one point I thought I could hear my feet pounding on the treadmill over the volume of the song.  Not the case, fortunately, considering what a huge pet peeve that is for me.  Anyway, I'm rambling...

Green: FUEL - Change Your Fuel, Change The World

By Sunday both of our wonderful communities were abuzz with info about Josh Tickell's film FUEL. Farilla contacted Rebecca Harrell for free tix to Sunday evening's screening in Santa Monica. It felt really good to support such a positive film about solutions to America's oil addiction.

Synopsis:
FUEL is an insightful portrait of America’s addiction to oil and an uplifting testament to the immediacy of new energy solutions. Director, Josh Tickell, a young activist, shuttles us on a whirlwind journey to track the rising domination of the petrochemical industry—from Rockefeller’s strategy to halt Ford’s first ethanol cars to Vice President Cheney's petrochemical company sponsored energy legislation — and reveals a gamut of available solutions to "repower America" —from vertical farms that occupy skyscrapers to algae facilities that turn wastewater into fuel. Tickell and a surprising array of environmentalists, policy makers, and entertainment notables take us through America’s complicated, often ignominious energy past and illuminate a hopeful, achievable future, where decentralized, sustainable living is not only possible, it’s imperative.

FUEL screenings have been extended another week in Santa Monica due to grassroots efforts. w00t!!! And even more screenings will be opening across the country in the next few days. The film needs 2,000 viewers here in LA in order to get national distribution. Please support this documentary by watching it and helping to get the word out.

For FREE tickets to see FUEL
this Friday (2/20) @ 7pm in Los Angeles/Santa Monica send and email entitled "ABUNDANCE 2" to rebecca@thefuelfilm.com.

Art: Coraline - Handmade Craftiness In 3D

I have a new appreciation for cinema-filled rainy day weekends. Farilla took me to see Coraline in 3D on Saturday evening....absolutely visually stunning! Despite feeling like there were a couple of weak spots in the story-line this didn't in anyway detract from my overall enjoyment of the film. I was too busy studying all of the handmade delighfulness bursting from every scene! Ahhh, I LOVE me some stop motion!

And I'm especially loving all of the crafty creativeness inspired by this film. Thanks to Tikabelle you can get the knitting pattern for your very own Coraline gloves here AND her star spangled sweater here.

Travel: Dubai Is For Suckas!

[Boing Boing]
People are literally fleeing this place, to date leaving 3000 cars stranded at the airport with keys still in the ignition. And the reason for this is that if you default on your Dubai mortgage, you can end up in a debtors prison.

Running: A 5 Mile Morning

That's the last time I set a goal for myself so publicly...Wednesday morning I had the audacity to say "Next time...5 miles". This morning I EASILY could have stopped at 3...yawn! Then I thought I'd push on and at least match my last run. At the 4.5 mile mark I figured another half mile wouldn't kill me. Who knew running could be such a mental game!

Life: Happy 200th Birthday, Chuck!

Today marks the 200th anniversary of the birth of Charles Darwin! w00t! I suspect the Father of Evolution would have smiled for this photo had he seen the Finch-tastic banner Google has up today! Mad propz for all of your hard work, Chuck. I'm doing a little celebratory birfday shuffle in your honor right now (to the new Gui Boratto tune I just downloaded). I only wish we were all evolving at the same rate....if that were the case this major mistake may never have happened.

Humor: Indexed - Thanks For That!

Smiling at strangers is one of my favorite sports....I just can't help myself! It's one of the easiest things we can do to evoke a positive emotional reaction out of another person. The power behind this small gesture never ceases to amaze me! Smile!

Running: Thanks, Guilt!

Good run this AM.  Glad I made it out of the house.  It was cold and dark when I left...two of the main reasons I can't seem to get my ass out of bed more regularly in the mornings.  After waking up yesterday at 5:30 and never getting to the gym the guilt set in...YAY, guilt!  This seems to be my biggest motivator these days.

For Amy:  I NEARLY achieved a post runners high this AM.  And by nearly I mean that I didn't get to that super euphoric state but I was almost there....everything just felt REALLY good.  Every breath I took was stellar and I didn't notice any aches, pains or muscle twitches like my last few runs.  I suspect if I run a bit harder next time I'll get there.

Oh and I think it's worth noting that this was my first run in months where I didn't feel pain in rib muscles on the right side (an old post surgery injury)...SUCH a good sign!  Things are loosening up!

Humor: David After A Visit To The Dentist

[Thanks DaBomb]

This is my 7 year old son who had an extra tooth removed last summer, 2008. I had the camera because he was so nervous before I wanted him to see before and after.

He was so out of it after, I had to carry him out of the office. The staff was laughing and I had tears it was so funny.

Seriously funny, (poor little guy)! I've seen this exact same reaction in grown men out on the Playa...only mushrooms were involved.
