Art: How To Be Alone
HOW TO BE ALONE
by Tanya Davis
If you are at first lonely, be patient. If you've not been alone much, or if when you were, you weren't okay with it, then just wait. You'll find it's fine to be alone once you're embracing it.
We could start with the acceptable places, the bathroom, the coffee shop, the library. Where you can stall and read the paper, where you can get your caffeine fix and sit and stay there. Where you can browse the stacks and smell the books. You're not supposed to talk much anyway so it's safe there.
There's also the gym. If you're shy you could hang out with yourself in mirrors, you could put headphones in (guitar stroke).
And there's public transportation, because we all gotta go places.
And there's prayer and meditation. No one will think less if you're hanging with your breath seeking peace and salvation.
Start simple. Things you may have previously (electric guitar plucking) based on your avoid being alone principals.
The lunch counter. Where you will be surrounded by chow-downers. Employees who only have an hour and their spouses work across town and so they -- like you -- will be alone.
Resist the urge to hang out with your cell phone.
When you are comfortable with eat lunch and run, take yourself out for dinner. A restaurant with linen and silverware. You're no less intriguing a person when you're eating solo dessert to cleaning the whipped cream from the dish with your finger. In fact some people at full tables will wish they were where you were.
Go to the movies. Where it is dark and soothing. Alone in your seat amidst a fleeting community.
And then, take yourself out dancing to a club where no one knows you. Stand on the outside of the floor till the lights convince you more and more and the music shows you. Dance like no one's watching...because, they're probably not. And, if they are, assume it is with best of human intentions. The way bodies move genuinely to beats is, after all, gorgeous and affecting. Dance until you're sweating, and beads of perspiration remind you of life's best things, down your back like a brook of blessings.
Go to the woods alone, and the trees and squirrels will watch for you.
Go to an unfamiliar city, roam the streets, there're always statues to talk to and benches made for sitting give strangers a shared existence if only for a minute and these moments can be so uplifting and the conversations you get in by sitting alone on benches might've

Photos: Granite Pass Halloween Decompression
Last weekend we met up with some Legends and other memorable Space Creatures for our biannual trip to Granite Pass (aka Homeslice Decompression Vol. 2). We had one DJ for every five campers which equates to roughly 17+ hours of non-stop music. I'm not even kidding...Farilla and I started heading back to LA around noon on Sunday and the bass was still resonating off the rocks. So much love and appreciation goes out to those who participated and coordinated this outing. It was fantastic and EXACTLY what team Shutterilla needed. I'm still recovering from the sugar high. Mad love to you all.

If you live in LA you may have heard about this. Apparently this big
rig ran out of control yesterday on the 405 N while going about 10mph.
He came in contact with about 15 car before stopping. Some reports
say the driver appeared to be unconscious. He was taken to the
hospital. Traffic was backed up for miles during afternoon rush hour.
I'm glad he wasn't going any faster otherwise I suspect it could have
been a lot worse. I hope everyone is okay.

Wedding: Offbeat Bride - Creative Alternatives for Independent Brides
47 days engaged!
I started reading Offbeat Bride
a couple weeks ago along with a plethora of other incredibly informative wedding books (lent to me by the most beautimous, Raven. Thank you!). Can I just say, THERE IS SO MUCH TO KNOW, YO! What I thought was going to be a simple and casual celebration of our love and commitment to one another is quickly turning into a major event (relatively speaking). And, aside from throwing a birthday party here and there this offbeat-bride-to-be knows next to nothing about event planning. I'm so grateful for supportive parents, creative friends, a fiancé who worked in the event industry for may years and, yes, the internet! Anyway, back to the book...I haven't gotten very far into it but Ariel had me hooked just a few pages in when she shared a story about hoop dancing.....in a bar .
Stop scratching your head...it's called Offbeat Bride for a reason.
As if that wasn't apropos enough, a few pages later was the first mention of Burning Man.
Side note: Farilla and I first met at Burning Man in 2001. We were friends for may years before he asked me out on our fist date in 2008. He proposed to me this year in the same place we met 9 years earlier.
So, as previously mentioned, I'm not very far into this book but I'm very excited to see what it has to offer.
If you're planning an offbeat wedding you might also consider checking out:

Oh! And I'm beyond thrilled to share that as of about 30 minutes ago our wedding venue contract was signed, sealed and delivered. A very Shutterilla wedding is on for the Summer of 2011. Stay tuned...
