DIY: No Sew TuTu

My favorite tutu EVER was gifted to me a couple of years back at Burning Man by my beautiful Playa-sister, Vallier. I just ran across this tutorial showing exactly how she made my no-sew wonder!

Oh! And Happy Tu-Tu-Tuesday!

Photos: Burning Man 2009 - Evolution

10th Burn = BEST BURN EVER! I know I say that every year but it's so true. Each year just gets better and better. Introducing Farilla to the world of Greeting was such a treat...he's a natural! Shutterillaville was, without a doubt, the most comfortable home I've ever had on the Playa. This might explain the abundance of sleep we got this year. Note, the missing pics of the Burn...no, we didn't miss Burn Night altogether but thank goodness for those fireworks otherwise we may not have woken up in time. That said, this year marks the second time I've watched the Burn from the Tower. The art was stellar, our community was supportive, the weather played nice and the winds were tolerable. What more can I ask for? Below are a few of my favorite shots...for all 300+ pics from our evolutionary Playa adventure click here.

Hoop Dance: Photos- Lighting Up Ceremony

As promised, here are some wonderful pics and vids (courtesy of Farilla & Special Ops) documenting the Fire Groove lighting-up ceremony. HUGE thanks to them both for capturing these moments! What an incredible experience. I couldn't stop smiling for HOURS after we left the beach. Of course, I'm now itching to explore ALL of the other fire tools as well. Staves, fans, poi....hmm, what's next?! Time will tell...until then I'll continue to practice my hooping. So much to learn.

From the videos below you can see that I kept things simple for my first two twirls. It's a whole other world standing inside that fiery vortex. There was so much new-ness for my brain to digest in those moments. The fire whirling around my head was disorienting at times and trying to spin in sand was much tougher than expected. I suspect my courage to try different moves will grow the more I work with the fire. One thing is for sure, I'll never forget the sound the fire made as it swirled above my head for the first time. Completely wow'd! Thanks to everyone who came out in support...Mad Love to you all!

Life: Circus Training!

Life: Circus Training!
Originally uploaded by Sanctuary-Studio

It's official, I ran away and joined The Circus. The DWD Circus to be more precise. We had a our first photo shoot yesterday afternoon. The theme was Backstage Birdcage...I kid you not. The 'Stache was in full-effect. Pics to follow!

In prep for the circus I've been honing my hoop-dance skillz. I wish I could put into words what it's like to 'get' a move! All I can say for sure is that I now know what sheer brilliance feels like. Oh My! I'm completely addicted. HUGE thanks to Special Ops, my favorite FIRE hoop-dancing goddess! If it wasn't for all of your love, support and encouragement I'd still be just hooping around my waist. Yawn-city!

Photos: Farilla Practicing Buugeng

After a fantastic Sunday gathering at the Library Alehouse with my Nor Cal DHS crew Farilla and I wandered over towards the beach to catch the sunset. Along the way we encountered The Tree Man (aka "Lionel, on the inside"). Simply brilliant! I can't believe The Tree Man has never been to the Playa! If you see him around the Venice/Santa Monica area hook a brotha up with a tip to help him get to Burning Man, yo!

But I digress, it was such a beautiful afternoon we decided to grab Special Ops' Buugeng (which we PROMISE to return one of these days) to get in some practice time. I can't believe how quickly Farilla has picked up this mesmerizing art form! He's a complete natural! Here are a couple of stills I snapped with my iPhone...

Unfortunately these snaps don't do this beautiful visual art any justice. For a better look at Buugeng check out Dai, the Buugeng Master, here...

Burning Man: 2009 Art Theme - Evolution

(From Burningman.com.  Design by Rod Garret and Larry Harvey. Rendering by Andrew Johnstone and Rod Garrett.)

The day after we stepped off the Playa last August BMorg announced that the art theme for Burning Man 2009 is going to be Evolution.  If you're seeking inspiration for the Burn this year I encourage you to check out this stellar article from Wired Science.  As it turns out, next month marks the 200th birthday of the Father of Evolution himself, Charles Darwin.

I love this photo from Wired's article:

For Burning Man 2009 I envision feathers! Lots and lots of big, beautiful and VERY well secured feathers!

246 days until the Man burns! It's never too early to start creating.
