Life: CSA Box #2!

Yesterday I picked up my second CSA box. I couldn't wait to get home and assess my loot! I was happy to find a couple of new additions.

Life: CSA Box #2!
Veggies & hoops what more does a girl need?!

What I found:
Turnips
Parsley
Blue Kale
Red Kale
Swiss Chard
Rainbow Chard
Red Romaine Lettuce
Spinach
Carrots
Spring Onions
Collard Greens

After I put everything away I whipped up a smoothie:
Strawberries
Blueberries
Spinach
Almond Milk
Ginger
Walnuts

Super yummy! It was heavy on the ginger which I love. I also used some of the red romaine lettuce on our veggie burgers last night. Okay, on to researching turnip recipes now. So far this one sounds like a winner. Keeping it simple is key!

Photos: Ojai, Oh!

Farilla's been itching to get up into the mountains. Fresh air, pine trees, lakes, trails...you get the heavenly picture! We were planning on heading to Big Bear last weekend until we saw the forecast. Unfortunately this California girl doesn't do well in temps below 65 degrees. Thankfully, Farilla wasn't down with the 40/50 degree temps up there either. So, plans changed and we went to Ojai. Yay, for spontaneity! The weather was amazing. The valley and rolling hills were absolutely gorgeous! And my GPS was loaded with caches.

Life: Hoop Dance Hands!

<span class=

We've been working on vertical isolations and stalls. As with the bruised hip bones and elbows (yes, elbows!) I suppose these will also become less of an issue over time. After all, it's such a small price to pay for all of the fun I'm having!

Running: We Did It!

Three treks to the gym this week. It feels great. As we were walking in this AM I was totally whining because I didn't want to be there. Farilla was encouraging and reminded me how great I'd feel after my run. Once again, he was right. Thanks, Love, for the support.

Life: Breakfast!

This is how we made sure nothing in my CSA box went to waste...

Breakfast This AM

I didn't purchase a box this week. Trying to coordinate meals which include those greens turned out to be a lot more work than I anticipated. A week long break from having to think that much about food will be a good thing. I must say that our morning juice was fantastically hard core! Duuuude!

Turns out there were quite a few more (as in hundreds) demonstrators in support of humane animal-involved testing/research than anti-animal testers.

I heart Green Light mornings. It took exactly 5 minutes to get to the gym this AM. And despite a treadmill with a mind of its own I'm really happy with my workout. Such a nice way to kick off Earth Day!

I seriously feel great! This morning started off rough but I'm glad pushed through the tummy ache and made it to the gym. Feeling like I'm finally starting to hit my stride....again.

Yesterday we ventured up to the Topanga Earth Day Festival in Topanga Canyon. We had a blast despite the heat. Tons of fantastic vendors selling hemp, bamboo and organic cotton tribal'esque wearables. Yes, I was in heaven and even managed to walk away with a couple of new treasures. After lunching on a veggie sammich and a spinach and mushroom tamale (Mmmm, so good) we went down to Anah's (aka Hoopalicious) booth for some hooping. Farilla couldn't resist the the giganto hoop. Unfortunately, what I wasn't able to capture here were
the two little boys who began jumping over the long end of the hoop with each successful rotation.

Life: My CSA Box From South Central Farmers Cooperative

In case you've ever wondered what fourteen pounds of leafy winter green looks like... well, there you have it. On Wednesday I picked up my first CSA box from the South Central Farmers Cooperative filled with local, sustainable and organic produce. They have a drop-off location all of four blocks from my office. So convenient.

photo.jpg

Here's what $15.00 bought me:
Red Kale
Blue Kale
Black Kale
Red Romaine Lettuce
Butter Crunch Lettuce
Cilantro
Collard Greens
Mustard Greens
Bloomsdale Spinach
Red Beets
Rainbow Chard
Swiss Chard

Thank goodness for my blender and Tim & Tessa's juicer. Otherwise, I don't know how I'd get through all of this before it starts to wilt.

What I've made so far:
Wednesday night I sauteed up the three Kales & two Chards with garlic, lemon juice, chili pepper powder and olive oil. We ate this with some Quinoa. Admittedly it was just okay...too many competing flavors amongst the greens. Lesson learned. For lunch the next day I made a salad with the romaine, butter crunch, red onion, walnuts, tomatoes, n/f Feta with a Vinaigrette dressing. Yum City! And last night while researching green smoothies I threw together a very non-green beet, blueberry, kale, walnut, n/f plain yogurt, vanilla almond milk smoothie...double yum city. In fact, I'm sipping on one of these as I type.
photo.jpg

Between what we've already eaten and what I've given away I've still barely made a dent in the box. Yep, I foresee a major juicing extravaganza this weekend! Interweb, if you have any recipe suggestions feel free to leave 'em in the comments below!

It's official, I ran away and joined The Circus. The DWD Circus to be more precise. We had a our first photo shoot yesterday afternoon. The theme was Backstage Birdcage...I kid you not. The 'Stache was in full-effect. Pics to follow!

In prep for the circus I've been honing my hoop-dance skillz. I wish I could put into words what it's like to 'get' a move! All I can say for sure is that I now know what sheer brilliance feels like. Oh My! I'm completely addicted. HUGE thanks to Special Ops, my favorite FIRE hoop-dancing goddess! If it wasn't for all of your love, support and encouragement I'd still be just hooping around my waist. Yawn-city!

Photos: Farilla's Birfday Weekend!

A couple of weeks ago we celebrated Farilla's 37th twirl around the sun! Pi Day was spent soaking in mineral baths, playing in the mud and re-hydrating in The Grotto at Glenn Ivy Hot Springs. Who knew a full day of relaxation could be so exhausting. From there we pushed on to Yucca Valley/Joshua Tree where I treated Farilla to dinner at Crossroads Cafe & Tavern. I thought the Tavern filled with climbers fresh off the rocks would be a perfectly nostalgic setting for Farilla's (other) birthday dinner. Good times, good food and a good-long wait to get our food led to a nice conversation (and free bday beer) with the owner of the tavern.

The next morning we were on the hunt for a rental property in the area which I read about last year in Apartment Therapy. Just our luck, we ran into the architect. Robert was kind enough to spare a few minutes to give us a tour of his rental (pictured below) along with another rental he's currently working on...picture an infinity pool and jacuzzi just off of the living room. Yum! We've been thinking this might be a great setting to host a future Playa Surfers/Homeslice gathering-of-the-tribes. DJ's, dust off those decks! With a full kitchen, large jacuzzi, fire pit, full bath, BBQ and all-around righteous setting this space might just make a perfect location for a little desert glamping!

After our tour of the rentals we spent some time geocaching with my new(ish) handheld GPS.

My New'ish Toy!

Put 'er Back

SUCH A Beautiful Day!

We worked up an appetite finding a couple of caches so we made our way into The Park for a picnic lunch. We stumbled upon a familiar spot in Jumbo Rocks where we decided to feast on sammiches and enjoy the sunshine for a bit. Farilla was so inspired by the moment that he decided to break out the Buugeng.

Mad <span class=

So much fun! I still can't believe how much we were able to squeeze into that weekend.  Thanks, Love, for being born!

In honor of all of this cheesy melty goodness Clementine is once again paying homage to the grilled cheese sammich by offering a special month-long menu dedicated to...you guessed it! Their menu, which changes weekly, will feature 5 different sandwiches each week. All of which can be prepared meatless! Yay, for veg-friendliness!

3AM Grilled Chez Deluxe

Also, taking place later this month with be the 1st 7th Annual Grilled Cheese Invitational. I have yet to personally partake in this event but who knows....this year might be the winner! The location will be announced on the 20th. Until then mark your calendars for the big event on the 25th.
